Oh, hello May! You’ve heard me mention that almost every weekend in May I’m doing a challenge, and my mega month of challenges started with a big, sunny, sandy bang with Tribal Clash Portugal. It was an incredible weekend of friends, fitness and fun, and I’d recommend it to anyone with a reasonable level of fitness.
We were lucky to have an amazing team pieced together of friends from around the UK, including John and Leon from The Lean Machines, Georgina from Fitcetera, Rhian Pearson, plus Alex Millington, who stepped in last minute for our friend Zack who was resting before Regionals. We also had Ian Runs LDN as support team who took our awesome photos! Only Rhi had done the competition before, which was fortunate as she could use her experience to help strategise for the workouts. We finished 58th out of 131 teams overall and even finished 21st in the SUP race, so we were mega pleased with that!
Throughout the weekend I kept in mind what I’d want to know before my Tribal Clash, so here’s the 11 things I think you need to know before competing at your very first Tribal Clash competition.
So you’ve decided you want to buy a pair of weightlifting shoes. That’s awesome – time to get under the bar fast and lift heavy! While a pair of shoes isn’t going to turn you into an Olympian overnight, different shoes will suit different people. The CrossFit Games Open is coming.
That sentence is enough to strike fear into the heart of a seasoned CrossFitter, and yet we all do it every year… for fun, no less.
But if it’s your very first Open you might be wondering “should I scale the workouts or go RX?” The discrepancy between the movement standards is pretty sizeable, although that is to make the Open accessible to all, whilst leaving the elite to thrash it out at the top of RX.
Should you at least give RX a go, though? Five CrossFit coaches – of different experiences of coaching and competing – tell us their thoughts. You can make your mind up from there, but don’t forget your score still counts whether you RX or scale, and you can switch it up from workout to workout.

With a new year comes new challenges – and mine is to learn to swim properly! Not just for Tribal Clash, but being able to hit the pool every week to do effortless lengths is amazing to me. I started my lessons last night and will be learning every Tuesday for the next 13 weeks, so I’m sure I’ll let you know how I get on.
I’m very lucky that one of my coaches (and friends!) Emma is a mega swimmer, who has won international medals in swimming – with thanks especially going to her CrossFit training. It’s customary for every CrossFit box to celebrate the holiday season and have a big blow out at the end of the year with a massive WOD.. but incredibly, despite being three Christmases into the sport, I’ve managed to avoid it so far! This year, though, there was no getting out of it, so I got myself to Reebok CrossFit Stockport to celebrate the season with the gang.
The workout goes just like the song – so you do one rep, followed by one rep of the first move, then two reps of a new movement, then one rep, two reps, then three reps of another movement, and so on. This means you do a total of 364 reps for time, and there’s no simple moves in this workout, everything should be scaled so it’s challenging for you.

How was your year? Mine was a pretty busy one! From work projects to CrossFit competitions to travelling, things have been non-stop, and honestly I haven’t had much time to reflect on my progress and assess where I was headed.
It’s so important to self-reflect, so this year I’m going to dedicate some time to it, and ensure I’m working towards my goals rather than shooting off in random directions.
